After you have completed your 14 days of mandatory hotel quarantine, you are entitled to buy a certain amount of alcohol and cigarettes, tax free at the Mauritius Airport Shop.
The Duty Free shop is located at the old terminal of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport. The only problem is that it is not at all easy to find. We got lost once but managed to create a video to show exactly how to drive there. The secret is that you should look for the blueish sign of “Airport Shop” and not “Duty Free”.
At the time of writing you can buy the following amount of alcohol or tobacco per person:
- 5 Liters of Hard liquor OR
- 10 Liters of wine or beer OR
- 2 Liters of Hard Liquor and 6 Liter of wine OR
- 250g Tobacco
Make sure you have your passport AND plane ticker OR boarding pass with you. We didn’t have the latter and we had to email it to them on the spot. The reason why they need this as they make a copy of you passport and a copy of the plane ticket or boarding pass and it will be checked multiple times while you shop and when you pay for your goodies.
The actual place where you can pick and choose your items is in the back of the Duty Free shop. They have a very good selection of Whisky but if you are looking for other things like Vodka or Tequila you will have limited options. We have compared the prices of Jameson and Smirnoff with the prices in Super U and Intermart and it turned out that the vodka would be almost the same while you can save a lof of money if you buy any of the Whisky available. We bought the following items:
- Jameson Whiskey 1L @ €23 each
- Jameson Caskmates 1L @ €29 each
- Teeling Whiskey 1L @ €46 each
- Martini Dry and Bianco 1L @ €8 each
Overall it was a good shopping experience, with nice and helpful staff around, as a bonus you get cool looking, strong, long lasting, re-usable bags with your products.
