Thailand: Koh Samui 2011

Koh Samui is an island belonging to Surat Thani Province, off the east coast of the Kra Isthmus in Thailand. It is Thailand’s third largest island and one of the most popular among tourists. Many package tour operators organize 1-2 weeks breaks to Koh Samui. Most of the tourists on the island are on a short break so it is not really a backpacker paradise. Many backpackers actually only come to Koh Samui to get to the surrounding islands such as Koh Tao or Koh Phangan.

If you are into eco-tourism seeing how local people live this is definitely not the place for you. However if you just want to to relax and have the choice to eat all kinds of food, do decent shopping in one of the large supermarkets on the island and get offered with the same comfort and range of products like back home it is a perfect place to stay 🙂

The weather is really hot all year long the monsoon season should stop at the end of November so starting December there should be sunshine 🙂 Unfortunately this year it is not like that… The monsoon actually never stopped it might be climate change or something like that but it is really annoying to sit in your apartment or hotel room, wait for the weather to improve and it just never happens.

The island however offers many activities even for the rainy season. Many tours are being organized around the on the island several shows run daily such as Thai Boxing matches at Xin City on Chaweng Beach, sea lion and tiger show in the Tiger Zoo, or the ill-famous monkey show in Bo Phut.

We stayed 2 months on this island and I must say that we were very happy staying here. Even though the weather was bad it is still not winter like back in Europe. We will definitely come back.
