One word: Impressive 🙂 Very very impressive. Nobody knows who, why and how did put these gigantic jars there but they are there and surrounded by mystery. The sites are about 3000 years old and crammed with jars each carved out from one stone.
There are about 60 sites where Jars can be found however only 3 can be visited. The rest was not cleared from bomblets and vegetation and it is dangerous to visit.
The first site is about 12km from Phonsavan easily accessible by motorbike as there is a paved road all the way to site 1. This meant to be the biggest site with the most Jars and the easiest to find. The entrance fee for each jar site is 10.000 Kip per person.
Jarsite 2 and 3 is about 35km from Phonsavan and it is a very bumpy ride as only a dirt road going there. The road signs are very poor we missed the turn a couple of times. We only visited site 3 from these as I was tired of driving on the dirt road for hours. Jar site 3 is on a top of a hill a small path leads up there through fields but it is definitely worth visiting. Avoid eating at the small restaurant next to the entrance as 2 of us got food poisoning from eating there and it was a little too pricey compared to restaurants in town.
The most important thing is when you visit the jar sites that you always stay on the path as there might be unexploded bombs ( UXO ) anywhere in the area. There are red/white markers showing you the safe path.
