We booked this trip through a travel agent on Main Street Luang Prabang. The cost of the journey was 110.000 Kip / person. There are many options to choose from.

There is not a big difference in prices between the local bus and the minivan and the minivan does take you to the centre of Phonsavan instead of leaving you out in the Bus station about 2km from the city center.
The trip takes around 8 hours and the roads are very very curvy between the two cities as it does go all the way between and on mountains. Personally I was suffering and was about to throw up several times during the trip. There aren’t many stops throughout the journey and at most places the minivan stops we had to pay 2.000 Kip for using the toilettes.
Tip: There are also flights going between Luang Prabang and Phonsavan for about $40 one way.
