As we had an apartment reservation for the month of December in Koh Samui We decided not to struggle through Thailand with multiple trains and buses but we take a connecting flight from Veintaine to Koh Samui. We booked the flight on ebookers and it was €480 for both of us one way.
Veintaine airport is very small, easy to get around there is no need to get there hours earlier. One important thing though is that u HAVE to exchange all your kips back into US Dollars or Thai Baht as you won’t be able to do that anywhere else in the world. We still have a good few thousand Kip as we forgot to do this in Vientiane.
Since there are no direct flights we had to take a connecting flight in Bangkok. We were flying Lao Airlines from Vientaine to Bangkok, then Bangkok Airways from Bangkok to Koh Samui. As these airlines are not in the same airline group they the staff at Vientaine airport could check in our bags until Koh Samui however they couldn’t issue a boarding pass all the way to Koh Samui only until Bangkok.
Upon arrival to Bangkok surprisingly Lao Airlines staff was waiting for us with a minibus on the platform and took us all the way through to the transfer desk to get a boarding pass to the next plane then to the immigration checkpoint. This was unexpectedly handy!
Both flights were very good, nice staff, free food on board, generally speaking we were very happy with the service provided not to mention that it took us 6 hours to get to Koh Samui instead of the 2-3 days non-stop travel on ground.
