Laos: Vang Vieng 2010

Vang Vieng is cool 🙂 We really liked it. We actually liked it that much that we stayed for 10 days. It is a perfect place to cool down after weeks and weeks of non-stop travelling. Many restaurants, guest houses and of course the world famous tubing.

Vang Vieng itself is a relatively small town, surrounded by mountains on one side. This city is really focused on serving the westerners taste. Many theme bars playing non stop Family Guy, Friends and many other series. The food menu is almost identical in every restaurant having, thai, lao, and all sorts of western food needless to say that many restaurants are not very good in food quality so u better choose carefully. We were generally happy with the food and the ice cold beer in the Aussie Pub, Nisha Indian Restaurant ( finally one serving authentic indian food ) and Milan Pizzeria on Main Street, the rest of the culinary experience was forgettable.

Prices are pretty much the same everywhere ranging from 15.000 Kip to 50.000 Kip / meal. If you think that eating on a street market will save you money you are wrong. Street sellers working with similar prices as restaurants however the best cheeseburger we had was made by this lady offering pancakes, sandwiches, and burgers just besides the tubing place.

If you are interested in biking or driving on a terrible dirt road with extremely poor signs, you can go and see the lagoon and the many caves around Vang Vieng. We only attempted to visit one cave unfortunately it was already dark so we finally decided not to go in. There are many bridges over the river the most obvious one is a toll bridge with questionable quality. The toll is 20.000 Kip for a scooter. Locals usually use the small dodgy bridges to cross or just simply drive right through the river.

We have really spent our time In Vang Vieng with relaxing, having a good couple of drinks and not to worry about anything. This is the perfect place for this kind of activity however if you are into trekking and sightseeing and all sorts of active holiday thingy this might not be the best place for you 🙂
