Koh Chang is a beautiful island and the best way to discover it to rent a scooter or a motorbike. I need to add though that do not try to drive here if you are an unexperienced modorbike driver. I have seen some western people having motorbike accidents on these hills during my 7 days stay. The east coast is an easy drive not many curves the west coast however is packed with dangerous curves, very steep roads and if it rains there are several streams running right across the road.
The roads are in a very good condition compared to Ko Samet and the scooter rental is cheaper. You can have a 150cc scooter for 150 Bath a day more powerful ones are starting at 200 Bath / day. You can get petrol in virtally every little shop besides the road. Petrol is being sold in a whisky bottle and it costs between 30-50 Bath / bottle. There are a couple of petrol stations on the island to get the best and the cheapest option 🙂
The scooter rental guys usually empty the tank once you give the motorbike back so if you plan to rent the same bike the next day and you think that it is still at half tank you will be dissapointed. This is how they make extra money they sell whatever extra petrol left in the bikes.
The funniest part was when this guy tried to resell me the petrol that I left in the bike the previous day.
To Summarize this: Riding a scooter on Koh Chang is a lot of fun, make sure that you take out a bike in a good condition as a shitty one might not climb up the steepest hills. Be very careful, dangerous curves, steep roads are all over the island.
