Gobernador Gregores lies between Perito Moreno and El Calafate. It is located on road 25 which is an all paved, good quality alternative to Ruta 40. We discovered this town when we took a detour off Ruta 40 trying to stay on paved road as long as possible. This detour will save you around 65km of gravel road driving and about 1 hour of travel time.

Gobernador Gregores has two petrol stations. YPF is just at the edge of town if you enter Gobernador Gregores from the North, the other petrol station is on the main road and I am unsure if it is still operational as it is very small and looked empty. YPF has a small restaurant selling all the basic stuff like empanadas, sandwiches, etc.

There is mobile phone coverage from Movistar and Claro, however Claro has only GPRS available no 3G or 4G. I do not even remember the time when I have seen the GPRS sign active on my phone last.

Weirdly enough most streets are one-way and extremely wide which is very strange for a city of this size. I found it quite amusing to drive around town having absolutely no traffic, still feeling like driving in a major city.

The city’s tourism is mainly based around people traveling to other locations in Argentina so I would imagine that very few people would stay longer than one night here. It has a few hotels, restaurants and supermarkets so you can rest, stock up, fill up and leave the next morning. If you are looking to withdraw cash there are also ATMs in town, located on main street.

We stayed overnight in Gobernador Gregores on our way back from El Calafate. We lodged in Hosteria Kaiken Gregores. This small hotel was one of the best hotels we ever stayed in South America, seriously! Large rooms, HUGE and very comfortable bed and pillows, fantastic shower, excellent WIFI, very good private parking and extremely friendly, helpful owners. Whoever designed and built this hotel definitely had an eye for detail.

We left from Gobernador Gregores very early in the morning towards Perito Moreno to make it to Puerto Rio Tranquilo in Chile by nightfall.
