After staying a few days in Bariloche we stared our journey down south. We figured we won’t be able to drive all the way down to El Chalten in one go from Bariloche so we did split the trip into to sections. The first section is to drive down until Perito Moreno city from Bariloche, then to drive to El Chalten from Perito Moreno City. Perito Moreno is also the name of the Glacier near El Calafate and not to be confused with the city having the same name.
We left from Bariloche around 5:30am, google indicated that the trip will take around 9 hours and 40 minutes. The trip took us 12 hours instead of the 9:40 because we stopped for lunch in Gobernador Costa and we also filled up at every gas station we passed by it is important to point out here that every gas stations on this section are taking credit cards. Mobile phone coverage is only available in urban areas, there is absolutely no coverage on the road thankfully we downloaded offline maps for the whole ruta 40 for google maps.
We found the road quality quite OK. All paved and only about 20% has surface issues like potholes. Between Rio Mayo until Perito Moreno the speed limit is 110km/hr which is quite good. High winds however did slow us down substantially. The scenery changes dramatically from lush forests to dry pampa after Esquel.
We created a video that shows the highlights on this roadtrip including uban areas so you have an idea what is out there:
