Thailand: Koh Samui Finding Long Term Accommodation 2011

Since We have stayed 2 months on Samui and we had an apartment reserved for a month only we had to hunt for a new apartment for stay for the second month.

Our requirements were:

– Separate bedroom
– Living room and fully equipped kitchen ( this includes a cooker and this was the most complicated to find )
– Fridge
– Bedlinen and towels provided
– Preferably parking for motorbike

This is our experience:

– Many long term accommodation providers are not even on the internet so your best chance to find a place to stay is to drive around and explore on your own. This initially scared us that we will not find anything but just to be sure apart from the christmas/new years eve season there are always apartments available. The selection provided by R24.org is very little and extremely overpriced. This way we ended up paying 30.000 Baht / month for the 1st apartment we stayed.

– Do not book any apartments over the internet book some cheap hotel and use it as a base to explore the area you want to rent. You should be able to find an apartment in less than 72 hours.

– Tesco, Big C do have on wall message boards with job and accommodation offers. Use it!

– All condominiums – even though they look like only for sale – do offer short/long term accommodation. Most of them are not beach front but offering very good accommodation on a lower price. You can rent these by day, week, month or even for a year. The longer you rent the less you pay.

– Drive into every small mountain road you can find real gems and very nice places. If you would like to rent a villa or a house this is your best chance to find something away from the crowd.

– Many do not have a cooker in the room. Have some kind of a kitchen but you can’t actually cook. If you do not have this requirement you can find and apartment in no time.

– Many do not have decent free internet connection ( only in lobby )

– Forget shiny resorts and basically most of the “long-term” accommodation around Chaweng Lake as they either dirty or overpriced.

The prices:

The lowest price we found was 15.000 Baht / month ( no internet or kitchen ) most of the otheres were in the 20.000 Baht range and Long Term Accommodation close to the beach starts around 30.000 Baht / month. We finally stayed at Baan Arisa which I can only recommend to anyone wants to stay longer on Samui.
